Frustrated with lack of results? Do you keep cheating on your diet and losing motivation? Do you find it hard to resist temptation and lose weight? The diet mentality is probably what is keeping you away from your best self.

1.    Face the facts or Dont resist temptation, give into it

Thinking excessively in terms of calories, healthy vs unhealthy food and being a slave to the number on the weighing scale are all warning signals. Most people dont realise when their desire to lose weight becomes an obsession. This often leads to eating disorders like binge eating, anorexia and bulimia. Being tempted to eat forbidden foods and feeling guilty or unsatisfied after consuming them is also a sign of a dieter mentality. Are those cupcakes in the neighbourhood bakery calling your name? Do you diet only to start binging again? Do you think your lifestyle is restrictive and unsustainable? Its time to change.

2.    Understand that healthy is a lifestyle or Slow and steady wins the race.

It is easy to get carried away by the tsunami of stick thin models on the pages of magazines and aspire to be like them. However, it is much harder to be healthy and comfortable in your own skin. A diet may seem like a quick fix to all your problems but they will come back bigger and better. Each time your mind tells you to restrict or you find yourself feeling guilty after a dessert, remind yourself that this is a lifestyle. If you’re thinking about going on a ‘diet’, stop right there. Instead, make one positive change at a time. This may be something small like eating an extra serving of fruits or vegetables. Though it might take you a longer time to lose the weight, your body will thank you for it.

3.    Choose self love over self judgement or Loving oneself is the start of a lifelong romance.

This is really important. A diet mentality stems from self-judgement, criticism and insecurity. It stems from a constant need for external approval, perfection and self hate. On the other hand, a healthy and happy lifestyle stems from self love. Youre not here to win a battle. Youre here to discover yourself. Youre here to love yourself. The beautiful person that you seek in the mirror is hiding inside you. Allow that child to come out. The minute you choose to substitute self judgement with self love, your perception of food and body image will change. Make conscious choice to love yourself every moment.

4.    Look up to positive role models or Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Your role model need not be a celebrity. It can be somebody around you like your mother, friend, neighbour or acquaintance. It may be the lady next door who makes you wish you could wash your own clothes at ninety. Having a positive role model who inspires you to be healthier is vital. It changes your perception of beauty. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

5.    No Expectations or Expectations are like fine pottery. The harder you held them, the more likely they were to crack.

I know this sounds counter-intuitive but it is an important tip. We have very high expectations from ourselves. We want to succeed at everything and say yes to everyone. However, that only leads to stress, disappointment and frustration. Instead, take a moment to exist. I find that meditation helps strengthen ones sense of inner peace. When you let go of expectations, you allow new and better things to come into your life. Do your best- that is all you can do.

6.    Get Help or Help, I need somebody

There are many sources you can get help from. Books like Intuitive Eating, Brain over Binge, How to Have you Cake and your Skinny Jeans too have helped me break out of the dieter mentality. Reading positive, uplifting books help you understand yourself better and adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. Focus on the positive. That will keep you motivated. Alternatively, if you are new to healthy eating, consult your nutritionist and adopt a realistic plan. You could also try talking to other people in this area or finding helpful resources on the internet.

It makes food your friend, not your enemy. Ultimately, it helps you lead a better, more fulfilled life. All success begins in the mind.
Heres to a healthier life!
